Why You Should Care About Writing

Especially as a military member… Every promotion, every award and every ribbon all boils down to one’s ability to write and account for ones actions. Be it writing an email to your supervisor or writing an Enlisted Performance Brief for yourself or others, writing papers and writing in general matters! Here’s a list of things to keep in mind and improve your writing skill:

  1. Don’t bury the lead – Keep your requests or desire’s at the top of whatever written content you’re making. That’s why this point is at the top of the list.

2. What is result you want from what your writing?

  • What is the reaction you want? (Happy? Sad? Anger? Curiosity?)
Keep core emotions at the forefront of your mind when writing for impact
  • What is the action you want the reader to take or do?

3. Keep your vocabulary simple. This is not to insult the reader – it’s understanding that most people only read at around a 5th to 8th grade reading level.

Be it writing with pen and paper, or typing on a keyboard, all forms of writing engage your mind in a helpful way.

With those 3 principles in mind – why is it so important to practice writing?

  1. Writing creates new ideas. As you write, your brain is forced to engage in a creative practice – thus generating new ideas, and new ideas can be powerful.
  2. Writing helps you think more clearly. To write clearly, you must think clearly – and to think clearly, you must capture your thinking in your writing. Clear thoughts lead towards clear communication which helps you get what you want out of life.
  3. Writing is easy to scale. You can write one article, one essay, one social media post and scale it infinitely! (Take this blog for example – I can write this one post in an hour and share it with thousands of people in a matter of seconds!)
  4. Writing is a form of persuasion – you can make people act with your words alone. It’s no coincidence that a well written book or article can drive you to feel emotion or to act and buy something for your household. Effective writing persuades people to ACT.
